Just a heads-up to anyone out there who might be in the same bind as I was. I scoured the 'net to no avail, and stumbled onto the solution:
Scenario:
- You get Nero 7 Essentials bundled with your dvd writer
- When you try to install it, it says that it's not compatible with Vista and tells you to check www.nero.com for updates
- You can't find any Nero 7 Essentials updates on their site
- You think, even if you could find an update, it's not going to help much because you can't even install - how the <bleep!> are you supposed update!?
Solution:
- Download and install Nero 7 Premium Reloaded
- If you tried to install from your OEM disc, your serial number's been saved on your system. If not, then, as the install instructions say, you can just put your OEM disc in and the installer'll go find it.
- The installer sees what serial you've got and correctly installs the 'Essentials' version
Not even the tech support person I online-chatted with at LiteOn (the DVD writer manufacturer) would clue me into that one. Hope this saves someone else some of the time I wasted on a product I'll probably end up never using....

Awesome, thanks dude :)

Tried it and it didn't work for me; tried a few more times figured out where I was going wrong...
To clarify: Ignore whether you have tried to install essentials before or not.
* At the serial number entry page of the Nero 7 reloaded install there is a link that says something like: "Where is my serial number". Follow that link (even though there may appear to be a serial number in the serial number field).
* You will then see an option to find your Essentials serial number on CD. Insert the CD and follow that option. If the serial is found, the install program will confirm this and proceed to install Nero Essentials :).
WHERE I WENT WRONG: I took the serial number in the serial number field to be my Essentials serial number. It wasn't, I guess it was the trial version serial or something. This may be due to the fact that I downloaded the full Nero 7 Reloaded (not upgrade).
Hope this helps someone too and thank you again whoever you are!

Thank you for the solution... I encountered the same problem with my Nero essentials, and didn't want to have to be stuck with Vista's default software. It too saved me a couple hours of probable tinkering.

I tried this, but after the installer extracted the files and prompted me to install the Ask.com toolbar, it disappeared and failed to complete the installation. Did anyone else experience this and if so, did you find a work-around?

I too had this problem, the installation program would disappear and fail to complete the installation after the Ask.com toolbar. Came across this tool on the nero website.
http://www.nero.com/nero7/eng/General_CleanTool.html
After running this (I got a few errors reported by windows - but it does complete). Then ran the nero installation again and it worked correctly.

This Nero 7 stuff is worse than a virus. Photoshop 5.5 would not launch after I loaded Nero. I unloaded Nero (not straight forward) and it now works. Nero sticks a small window on your bottom tool bar - I looked in start up and turn what I thought was everything off, but it still came up. On Netscape email attachments I sent to myself (MS Word doc), they all of a sudden were change to a different extension w/the nero iron next to it in the attachment window - I could never get the attachments to open up.
Be extreemly careful if you load this s/w - would recommend loading only the necessary drivers for the lighton drive.

Photoshop 7.0 is still working fine for me and... brendan - the "small window" i think u'll find is in actual fact a 'quick launch' button, which is infact optional lol ;)

Hey guys, thanks for the sugestions! I know these are old posts, but I have the same problem with my Nero 7 Essentials. After installing it, I thought I was ready to go, right? Wrong. It wanted me to 'update' the software. OK, no probelm there. I did, and it took FOREVER to install. And yes, it ran fine after the download - a 275+ MB download.
But, a message came up the first time I used it saying something about 'trial version' and 30- day period. Well, my trial period is over, and I can no longer play DVD's. Thanks, Nero7!
Anyway, I will try your suggestions and see if that works for me.
Thanks again!

I bought a new LiteOn CD/DVD burner for an XP system I am rebuilding for a friend. First I could not believe how long this CRAPWARE took to load. When it finally installed (I used the custom install calling for the bare essentials to be loaded) It seemed like forever. Then I found I had a bunch of crap I had de-selected loaded anyway...sheeesh. It also installed a search bar I hadn't selected. I could not even remove this via the msconfig startup menu. I quit!!!! I uninstalled Nero and now my BurnAware is working fine. What the hell has happened to Nero, its like spyware now. Too bad, it used to be the best.
